Few bicycle designs have earned the iconic status achieved by the classic Schwinn Sting-Ray family of wheelie bikes. Originally produced in 1963 with 20" front and rear wheels, Schwinn soon offered an upgraded version called the Krate with multiple gears, caliper brakes, and a 16" front wheel. Almost six decades later in 2019 Schwinn re-introduced their basic 20" Sting-Ray to another generation of bicycle enthusiasts.

Schwinn's Sting-Ray/Krate series proved so popular that it spawned a fleet of clones and imitators such as the Huffy Penguin, Raleigh Chopper, Sears Spyder, and many other brands and models. Most of these broadly similar bikes used 20" - 16" compatible wheels, tires, banana seats, sissy bars, and many other parts that are interchangeable with the vintage Schwinn Sting-Ray design.
