Unlike the 3 and 4-speed manual units of the past, most modern motor scooter clutches today use the relatively simple but durable scooter centrifugal clutch to transfer power from the engine to the rear wheel. An automatic clutch for scooters is often refered to as a "twist & go" clutch, a popular designation reflective of its ease of operation.

However there are still a few retro-styled scooters still made that use the older all-manual scooter clutches requiring the operator to shift from one gear to the next. These vintage technology clutch mechanisms are basically unchanged since their introduction in the 1940s and '50s!
