The rectifier prevents the capacitor from discharging prior to ignition. Upon ignition, the rectifier stops charging the capacitor, allowing the capacitor to transfer the charge to the ignition coil. As a safety note, the better the regulator, the brighter your light. And brighter lights equal greater visibility.
