Variators for scooters are the essential moving part of the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) found today in most scooters. A scooter variator provides the smooth transmission gearing in the automatic twist & go type machines. This combination of CVT variator auto-shift with the eco-friendlier 4-stroke GY6 engine design has all but replaced the older manual gearbox 2-strokers of the past.
Essentially expandable discs with six ramps and roller weights, vaiators for scooters are the most significant milestone in scooter technology for over a half-century. Although using an amazingly simple technology, the CVT variator sparked a revolution in scooter design that now encompasses all of the major scooter brands.
Like its cousin the centrifugal clutch, the scooter variator is a masterpiece of design simplicity. The CVT variator is a metal disc surrounded by a housing containing six ramps and roller weights. As the scooter's engine accelerates, the disc rotates faster. The centrifugal force moves the rollers outwards, causing the disc to climb up the shaft, activating the closing mechanism in the front pulley system. As the front pulley is forced to close by the variator disc, the rear pulley is pushed open. This automatic opening and closing of the pulleys provide the gear system's progressively higher and lower gears.
