What is a Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) Battery?

Rechargeable sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries are the most common battery found in scooters and motorcycles. A rechargeable SLA battery contains electrodes of lead and lead oxide suspended in sulfuric acid. As the lead and the sulfuric acid combine, there is a significant electrical discharge as a byproduct of the chemical reaction. This discharge in turn powers your scooter’s motor or electric ignition system. Sealed lead acid batteries have a low power-to-weight ratio compared to other commercially available batteries, which makes them ideal for high current applications such as mobility or recreational scooters.

What is an AGM Battery?

AGM batteries are a unique variety of sealed lead acid batteries, and are the most common sealed lead acid battery by far. AGM stands for “absorbent glass mat”, and refers to the fiberglass mats that holds the electrolyte suspended between the lead electrode plates. Because the acid is not “free”, AGM batteries can operate at much lower temperatures and have a much lower internal resistance than standard SLA batteries. The very low internal resistance of an AGM battery allows the battery to be charged and discharged very quickly. In almost all applications that call for one or the other, AGM and GEL batteries can be substituted for each other.

What is a GEL Battery?

A GEL battery, like an AGM battery, is a specific kind of rechargeable sealed lead acid battery. Rather than floating free between the lead electrode plates, the sulfuric acid is suspended in fine grained silica which creates an immobile gel. GEL batteries are generally more stable than other sealed lead acid batteries and boast a lower discharge rate, at the expense of requiring a specific battery charger that matches the charge profile of the GEL battery cell. In almost all applications that call for one or the other, AGM and GEL batteries can be substituted for each other.

What is the difference between a Deep Discharge Battery and a Starting Battery?

Different construction materials and electrode plate composition gives the two battery types their unique properties. Deep discharge batteries have thicker plates and are designed for long and slow discharge cycles; starting batteries have a thinner plate and are designed for quick bursts of high energy. Generally, a deep discharge battery is used in long range electrical applications, such as mobility scooter or power chairs, and a starting battery is used in electric ignition systems for gasoline powered street scooters.

Which Rechargeable Sealed Lead Acid Battery is right for my application?

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a "universal" sealed lead acid battery. Different applications are designed around a specific rechargeable SLA battery, and installing the wrong battery may have an undesired effect on your scooter. The run time of your electric scooter may be impacted by an incorrectly sized sealed lead acid battery and you may even cause damage to your scooter’s electrical system.
