SLA, AGM, or Gel; what does it all mean?
Our mobility scooter and power chair battery packs are made of what is referred to as Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries. Unlike the old refillable wet-cell batteries that still power millions of cars, SLA batteries are hermetically sealed in their plastic body and cannot be opened or topped off. The lead cells hold the liquid electrolytes (or acid). Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are a subcategory of the SLA family where the acid is absorbed or suspended in a fiberglass mat to prevent the liquid from sloshing around inside of the battery. Modern gel batteries use a jelly-like semi-solid material in lieu of liquid acid. Gel mobility battery packs offer several advantages over their AGM counterparts, including a longer lifespan, but due to their manufacturing process are usually a bit more pricey. In short, all AGM and gel batteries are SLA batteries, but not all SLA batteries are AGM or gel batteries. Many of our larger mobility scooter batteries are offered in both an AGM or a gel configuration.

Once only found in portable consumer electronics, safe and dependable Lithium batteries are making an impact in the mobility world. Their light weight, rapid recharge, and charge longevity have made them a popular alternative to traditional acid-based batteries. In addition, several scooter manufacturers have embraced 21st century Lithium technology to design ultra-lightweight scooters that are easy to transport.

As they work together as a team, the batteries in a pack should always be replaced as a pair. They should never be replaced a single battery at a time. As always, we recommend you consult your scooter’s manufacturer or owner’s manual for your deep cycle battery specifications.
